Artwork Description

The quokka is often called “the world’s happiest animal,” and this artwork was inspired by that spirit of optimism and warmth that Australians are known for. I wanted to capture the pure joy and friendliness of this beloved creature, resting calmly in the grass as though smiling at everyone who passes by. The soft strokes, light washes, and grounded composition bring together culture, place, and nature in harmony.

This piece is created using traditional Chinese ink techniques, blended with contemporary brushwork to capture a uniquely Australian subject. The grass details are painted using layered washes and dry-brush texture to celebrate the landscape.

Artist Bio

I was born in China in 1959, a time of great change and uncertainty. Art became my quiet refuge and my way of understanding the world around me. Over the decades, I’ve witnessed my country transform through many eras, and those experiences live in my paintings—through quiet landscapes, gentle brushwork and the spirit of tradition.

I specialise in traditional Chinese painting, using techniques passed down through generations. I have always believed that every brushstroke should carry intention, memory and feeling. Nature, poetry and philosophy guide my hand—whether I am painting birds, mountains, flowers or mist.

Melbourne has been my home for many years, and it is here that my artistic practice continues to grow. Moving to Australia allowed me to blend the heritage I carry with the beauty and calm of my new surroundings. All of my artworks are created by hand in my studio here, and any prints are also made locally in Australia to honour both quality and authenticity.

When people connect with my paintings, I hope they don’t just see an image—I hope they feel a moment of stillness, reflection or familiarity. My work is shaped by memory, migration and culture, but it belongs to anyone who finds peace or meaning in it.

Thank you for taking the time to view my art. It means a great deal to me to share these stories and traditions, and I am grateful when a piece finds its way into someone’s home and heart.
