Born in Penang, Malaysia from Scots, Malaysian and Australian heritage, I am a contemporary neo-post-impressionist realist. My passions are for colour and movement and the strange wonder of what we see – in people, places and objects. I enjoy the never-ending challenge of attempting to master the tonal richness, subtleties and daring of oil as well as the freshness and vitality of pastel. Somehow to balance subtlety and boldness!
I mainly like portraits, figure and contemporary plein-air landscape painting. I bring a broad multi-cultural experience to my art-making, while continuing to learn. With earlier degrees in arts and engineering, then varied work experience, I was finally able to find Sydney’s contemporary classical art schools. After four years’ formal study in Australia and France, plus Madrid workshops with Nicolas Uribe and Miguel Coronado, and Sydney workshops with Idris Murphy, Kim Spooner and others, I have been lucky enough to exhibit in many prestigious group shows in N America, Europe and Australia. Prizes include being a finalist in the Mosman and Percival prizes in Australia and semi-finalist in the Moran, NSW Plein Air and Spain’s ModPortrait prizes. Other highlights include having a third solo show in Sydney in 2024.
