Hugh Kerr is an artist working mainly in oils paints and pen and ink, who lives in Hobart, Australia. His work is cerebral, politically aware and surreal. Hugh is originally from the UK. Before settling in in Tasmania he travelled extensively with his family and in his former role as a geologist and environmental scientist in the UK, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. His work has been shown in a number of solo exhibitions in Tasmania from 2014 to the present as well as in group shows elsewhere in Australia and the UK. He has been shortlisted for a number of art prizes in the last few years including the 45 Downstairs Emerging Art Prize in Flinders Lane Melbourne in 2019. Although primarily self-taught he have developed my skills through constant stylistic experimentation and a variety of taught courses, individual and group tuition in oil painting received since coming to Hobart. His style is quite individual but is influenced by surreal and expressionist artists of the early 20th century. The themes he examines include science, nature and the environment but a more recently have been focused on working life, politics, and the mechanics of human society.
