Artwork Description

Nothing like a rock to interpret a drawing about rocks.

Canal Rocks is a popular tourist destination that is located along the South western coastline of Western Australia and is one of the stops along the Cape To Cape Track. There, one witnesses spectacular seascape views across the Indian Ocean. The crashing of the energetic ocean waves against the granite coastline has chiselled out a channel into the rugged rock formation over time.

The markmarking on this drawing of was done using a stone I picked up locally. I intended to have something that is more interpretative without the 'designed' look. My idea for this piece was for it to have a sense of casualness, as well as bearing a direct imprint of nature's elements. Simple, unsophisticated, but strongly textured.

This artwork is part of a "Margaret River" series.

Artist Bio

I'm a Perth-based Artist. Painting and experimenting with art in different mediums is my way of slowing down, to learn about life and the environment which surrounds us. This is especially important because we live in a speed-addicted digital age peppered with fast information and much distractions. Making art is also a reminder of what there is to love, hate or fear.

My Practice:

An artistic creation is like a form of conjuring, of combining observational work with personal imagination that can produce emotional and magical results. Inspiration for my current practice stems from the environment around us, whether natural and planned, and exploring the essences and metaphors that it carries. It has evolved to focus on the exploration of lightness and movement in the subject matter, in an expressive manner, through the adopting of looser, bolder strokes and colours. Depth and patterns are also typical theme in my current works. I take an experimental approach for creative process, by beginning with a broad composition in mind, to kickstart the drawing, pushing and smudging of inks, and wax, paint and other mediums around the paper or canvas. And because there is a certain degree of unpredictability in the method, adjustments are constantly made depending on how the drawing evolves and takes shape. The serendipitous results are more than often pleasantly surprising, communicating a kind of rawness and wildness.

My artistic journey and explorations are shared in my website: silentdoodles.com
