Artwork Description

Drawing on paper

Signed on the front.

My great-grandfather arrived in Queensland from Ireland in the 1880s and migrated westward, eventually find employment running a Cobb and Co stage coach changing station on this spot called McColluch’s Tank on the way from Jericho to Blackall. A “tank” was an earthen dam with a supply of water from a bore that was used to water horses coming and going with the coaches passing in each direction. Its now a ruin absorbed back into the surrounding bush, and the road is still unsealed in parts and there are many wild goats in the surrounding bushland. Roads are often very sandy, corrugated, and melt into the surrounding bush.
While many might find this a desolate and lonely place, it is also strikingly beautiful. In this image I’ve tried to capture atmosphere created by the heat of sun on the sand contrasting with the cool blue sky; the straggly, chaotic bushland contrasting the crisp order imposed by the road signs, and the wild goats ignoring everything and going where they will.
