Ilana’s bright, vibrant and bold style is distinctive and easily recognizable. The abundant use of yellows and turquoise lend her paintings a sunny quality, perhaps a reminder of her childhood spent in the Belgian Congo and Brazil. Her many years as a batik artist have also left an indelible quality on her painting style with the use of simple and striking primitive patterns.
In 1972 she migrated to Australia where she took a BA and Dip Ed in Modern Languages at Monash University. She continued to practice her batik and textile art alongside working as a teacher and translator. Ilana’s art is intuitive, vibrant, colourful and offers a reflection of the artist’s heritage and surroundings.
Flowers, leaves, circles, organic and geometric shapes, wonky buildings, turquoise filled landscapes are all some of the themes that appear and reappear in her work. Each painting contains several layers of quality acrylic paint and each one is isolated with gloss medium. The final coating is a professional UV protection varnish.
