This painting is an adaptation of the cover of my favourite childhood book; Blossom and Boo, a story of two best best friends by Dawn Apperly. It is nostalgic at it core, as I reminisce on memories. The book tells a story about two unlikely friends; a bear (Boo) and a rabbit (Blossom). They share every moment together, until Boo hibernates for the winter months, leaving Blossom waiting for what feels like an eternity, until her friend returns.
In my painting, the pair are caught in an encounter together. The viewers perspective determines whether the encounter is positive or even hostile, as Boo holds a finger up, standing on a flower, while Blossom stands hesitantly listening to what Boo has to say.
The painting deals with themes of betrayal and conflict between friends and the vulnerability of our feelings.
his painting is inspired by a childhood book titled Blossom and Boo - a story of two best friends, written by Dawn Apperly. Here, the pair are depicted sharing a bottle of wine over a dining table. However, the space is uncomfortable. The perspective seems flat and the subjects are pressed against the dark wall. A interrogative light hangs between the figures. The rabbit lacks expression - she seems confused or shocked as the bear speaks to her. It is an awkward situation made humorous by the ridiculousness of a dear and a rabbit together, drinking wine.
The large scale of the painting allows the viewer to feel almost included at the animals gathering. In dim light, at night time, the darkness of the bear appears to make him fade into the background. Is the bear cunning, devious or sneaky in his ability to disappear into the night?
