Born in Malaysia, Indrathevi Balakrishnan (known as 'Indra') is a Sydney-based Sri Lankan artist who demonstrated a prodigious talent for drawing from an early age. Rather than following a formal academic pathway, she pursued her artistic training through years of private study, beginning with watercolours under the tutelage of Garry Flemings and later working extensively in oils and acrylics under the mentorship of accomplished local artists Dave Thomas and Steve Underwood in the Camden and Campbelltown regions. Her work reflects a sensitive command of composition, colour, and light, informed by both classical and contemporary influences.
Working primarily in still life, portraiture, and pastoral scenes, her paintings capture moments of quiet observation and everyday beauty. Her work has been exhibited at Campbelltown Art Gallery, Camden Civic Centre, and the Royal Easter Show, among other local and regional venues.
Now nearing eighty, Indra continues to paint with the same curiosity that ignited her passion for art as a girl. Though her career has unfolded outside major institutions, her work is marked by confidence, warmth, and depth, reflecting a lifetime of commitment to carefully observing and painting the simplicity and wonder of the world around her.
