My piece, Collapsed Memory, is an abstracted self-portrait used to describe and translate past and present memories, bringing together moments throughout childhood to the present day. Layering individual moments to then collapse upon itself, creating one flat image. I used music to take me to places, making me feel the emotions I planned to document. The drawing is a representation of memories, anxieties and emotions compiled on top of each other. The use of mark-making, erasure, and blurring of lines has been used to symbolise how memory works and how mental illness feels. Inks were spilled over the surface to indicate loss of control, a document of panic attacks exploding over the surface. I used white gesso to represent feelings of light and erasure of memory, tainted by the marks beneath. The final image is a documentation of me and my identity.
