Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

The image is a self portrait and I have portrayed myself holding the hair I have just cut off, sitting in my studio chair. This painting is an expression of queerness and authentic gender expression.
The pink light symbolises traditional femininity being cast on women.
It is piece 2/2 in my body of work which focuses on the metaphorical meanings of hair cuts for women.

All art by Blair Isobelle

Woman sitting down, lower and upper body cropped out. She is holding a black and white cat and the cat is standing on her legs. The cat has a purple collar. The cat covers her chest and she is wearing underwear. Her skin has colourful shadows and highlights. In the centre of the image is a portrait of a caucasian female head, her face is looking downwards, her expression is melancholic. Her brown hair is framing her face and wisps of hair are being blown in the wind. Surrounding her head are petals of a large, white magnolia flower. Behind the flower are expressive brush marks of lilac, crimson red and teal that interact with the petals. The background of the painting is a textured, muted yellow. The painting is made of layers.
