The image depicts Sade's notorious ingénue - Justine- an innocent and hapless young girl who learns nothing from experience. Being devoutly religious she cannot imagine anyone being conniving or treacherous — which makes her susceptible to endless abuse and the harsh dangers of the world.
Even though she is sexually assaulted and abused by libertines throughout the novel Justine remains hopelessly sweet, naive, accommodating and virginal.
