About

Thomas grew up in Sydney, Australia where she began painting in 1981. Her first exhibition at the Eddie Glastra Gallery Paddington in 1988 featured the Crowdy Series, about the first successful whale rescue at Crowdy Head in 1983. Current events, the Australian landscape and cityscape continued to feature in Thomas' work. In the 1990s, she developed a series of work based upon the novel "The Last Temptation" by the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Thomas' travel to Greece, her studies in Ancient History and Philosophy, and her study of the Greek language, both Ancient and Modern have informed her work in more recent times. Her previous work drew upon ancient Greek poetry, the writings of Goethe on colour, and the writings of John Ruskin on drawing. Her recent work was a series on the compositional reinterpretation of iconic paintings from history. Presently, Thomas is illustrating the ancient philosophical text the Book of Change, also known as the I Ching, using Carl Jung's and Lao Nai-hsuan's interpretation, and also the inspiration taken from artworks throughout human history and culture.
