I can’t remember exactly why I decided to paint this particular dog, except that I had agreed to demonstrate painting at a local market called Hare of the Dog. I had prepared the canvas previously with gesso and rough brush stokes to create texture and then drew an outline. At the market I blocked in the basic shapes with thin coats of paint using the background texture to enhance the appearance of the fur. I particularly like this effect and have used it on a number of occasions. The demonstration itself was quite successful as people/customers were able to see how the painting progressed. This dog doesn’t actually exist so I have constructed the image from memories, and photos, of dogs that have featured in my life.
