Artwork Description

I can’t remember exactly why I decided to paint this particular dog, except that I had agreed to demonstrate painting at a local market called Hare of the Dog. I had prepared the canvas previously with gesso and rough brush stokes to create texture and then drew an outline. At the market I blocked in the basic shapes with thin coats of paint using the background texture to enhance the appearance of the fur. I particularly like this effect and have used it on a number of occasions. The demonstration itself was quite successful as people/customers were able to see how the painting progressed. This dog doesn’t actually exist so I have constructed the image from memories, and photos, of dogs that have featured in my life.

Artist Bio

Born in England, my family migrated to Adelaide, South Australia when I was 6 years old. At the age of 8, my parents enrolled me in Adult Education Art Classes to learn how to mix and paint with oils. Since then I have experimented with a wide variety of media and styles. I personally prefer to paint in oils, acrylics and watercolours but also enjoy the challenge of manipulating any material which might enhance the particular work in progress.
Over the years I have been commissioned to undertake many artworks ranging from lettering to portraits, and, have exhibited throughout South Australia. Between the years 2004 to 2012 I was employed by Prospect Council and the Port Adelaide/Enfield Council to facilitate painting classes and workshops. Most of the people who attended these sessions were retired and looking for an outlet for their talent and ideas. Unfortunately both councils decided to withdraw their funding and involvement with these groups, due to cutbacks, but I am happy to report that they are still going strong.
I am now entering a new phase of my life which will focus more on my own production, and creations, and less on teaching others. I have put an awful lot of projects on the back burner and now hope to find the time to see them through to completion, fingers crossed.
