This original painting allows you to come in close and experience the joy of colours inspired by sea and sky. It has a slightly out of focus look formed by gestural brush marks, lush glazes and a subtle texture. I love using this colour palette. The sublime turquoise, seductive ultra-marine, emeralds, the soft fluffy whites and creamy yellows. Delicious.
What lies below the surface. What lies above the surface. Inspired by the ocean surface from high above as well as the reflection of clouds and sky on the surface of tranquil waters. So still but always movement underneath. Like clouds floating in and out of focus.
Water as a subject, context and formal element seems to so often find its way back into my artwork. It reveals my passionate love of the sea and all things water. Whilst this painting appears abstract, it reflects a profound influence of the locale where I grew up – overlooking Bass Strait from a hilltop at Flinders. Here I am inspired by the cloud formations drifting in from the immense southern horizon. The reflected cloud patterns on the water. The hint at imminent downpours. Under currents and drifts. The movement and flow of all things air and water. The storms above and below the surface. Patterns on the macroscopic scale. I find all these things meditative and worthy of contemplation.
What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as making their walls bright and beautiful for years to come.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jacquelyn Stephens is a Melbourne based artist who has been successfully exhibiting her paintings for over 20 years since completing a BFA in Painting at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. She has gained an extensive knowledge of Art, quality art materials, techniques and theory from working closely in the arts industries and in her own art practice. Jacquelyn works full time from her studio on the Melbourne fringe. She has had several successful solo and group exhibitions in commercial galleries and artists run spaces. Her paintings can be seen in many media publications and are held in private collections worldwide. Many of the key themes in her work have been informed by her interest in water, nature, science and the domain of medicine.
