Artwork Description

This print is an original cyanotype. Also known as sun printing, cyanotype printing is a camera-less photography technique which uses sunlight to capture an image. I use the same method that was used in the 1800's.

The print size is 20.2 x 29 cm and it comes mounted with an off-white, acid-free matt board, ready to frame in a standard A3 frame. Matt board is 29.5 x 42 cm. Frame is not included.

I also have limited edition reproduction prints available.,

It was made by arranging layers of Pittosporum leaves between sheets of glass on top of paper coated with a photosensitive emulsion. This was then exposed to sunlight before being washed to reveal the final image.

'How the sun saw it' is my new collection. The collection plays on the notion that cyanotypes are really the sun's interpretation of what is presented by the artist. The sun is outside the realm of my control. In making these prints I must give way to the fickleness of the sunlight and the meddling of the clouds. I stand aside as the warm rays gently examine the opacity and translucency of what I place before it. There is no right or wrong. No good or bad.
It is just how the sun saw it in that moment.

Cyanotypes are archival, meaning they will last for a really long time, but best displayed out of direct sunlight. If they do begin to fade over the years, you can place them in the dark for a week or two and, like magic, they will regain their full colour. In a way they are a living memory of what the sun saw in a given moment in time!

Please note that I retain copyright of this image and may use it to design products such as clothing, accessories and homewares.

Artist Bio

Hello

I am an Australian artist based in Canberra. I also design accessories and make jewellery with my artwork.

You will probably have noticed by now that most of my artwork is blue. One day my lifelong love of all things blue and a chance encounter with cyanotypes collided ... and a new obsession was born.

Cyanotype printing is an early photography technique developed in the mid 1800s. There is no camera involved - just paper coated to make it photosensitive and some sunshine. The technique is easy to learn and crazy hard to master. The results can be maddeningly unpredictable - you really never know what you will get until the final wash and the image is revealed. Nevertheless, I am driven by the challenge of capturing blue moments in time, working in partnership with nature.

The sun and our garden are always centre stage in my creations. When I say 'our garden', I really mean my husband's garden. I have a brown thumb but fortunately he has 2 green ones ... so I get to reap the benefits of his hard work and just soak up the beauty of the plants, rue the short flowering seasons of some of my favourites, and wait impatiently for things to sprout and bloom. Using leaves and flowers in my artwork has given me a new appreciation for the little details that I never noticed before. Nature really is amazing!

Thanks for stopping by to read a little bit about me. I hope you see something you like. Please get in touch if you would like any more information about the pieces available for sale.
