This print is an original cyanotype. Also known as sun printing, cyanotype printing is a camera-less photography technique which uses sunlight to capture an image.
The print is not mounted or framed.
It was made by arranging layers of climbing rose branches between sheets of glass on top of paper coated with a photosensitive emulsion. This was then exposed to sunlight before being washed to reveal the final image.
'In the garden' is a collection in progress. It is comprised of original cyanotypes artworks that evoke the tranquillity of being alone amongst your favourite trees and flowers, but with a touch of fantasy on occasion. In making the final images I am allowing myself to play with the scene, use other mediums to highlight areas of the print or add in some whimsical elements, including birds and butterflies.
Cyanotypes are best displayed out of direct sunlight. If they do begin to fade over the years, you can place them in the dark for a week or two and, like magic, they will regain their full colour. In a way they are a living memory of what the sun saw in a given moment in time!
