Sometimes when your faith comes from outside sources, you can lost in illusions and lose the ability to heal yourself, with your own inner power and knowledge. Being raised by parents with quite strict religious beliefs, the idea of a healer outside of my own self was strange, just by praying and giving gifts; giving up my own power to choose my path. La Virgen de Guadalupe is one example, not shaming religion, just my perspective of such ideologies seem to always steer us away (especially for Black, Indigenous people of colour) from our instinctual and ancestral wisdom. Wisdom of self and our potential to come into our own home and heal. My mother wanted me to paint La Virgen, so I did in my own weird way. The reference for La Virgen is Maria Sabina, who was a Mazatec healer, a medicine woman/curandera in Oaxaca, Mexico. She provided healing ceremonies with native psilocybin mushrooms (psilocybe cyanescens). The giant mushrooms represent the gateway to freedom from the belief systems designed to keep you from finding your true power of creation and inner re-discovery.
