Emergence

Emergence unfolds as form breaks free from obscurity. Black gestural lines weave across textured layers of ochre, grey, and white, guiding the eye through a shifting interplay of space and movement. Punctuations of red and deep green rise to the surface, creating a sense of vitality and presence.

Part of the Traces series, this work captures the moment when hidden shapes reveal themselves — a visual metaphor for becoming, transformation, and the enduring marks we leave behind.

Jai Waters is a visual artist based in Woolgoolga, NSW, working at the intersection of symbolism, storytelling, and psychology. Drawing on her background in psychological practice, she creates emotionally resonant portraits that explore identity, memory, and the theatrical roles we perform in daily life. Jai focus is abstract expressionism having completed the Art to Life Creative Visionary Program with Nicholas Wilton as well as been an academy member with Adele Sypesteyn. In 2024 Jai discovered she had pareidolia - the ability to see faces in abstract shapes. This led to a body of works called Whispers in the Canvas and the publication of four books of stories to accompany her paintings. Through paint and narrative, Jai invites viewers to engage with the quiet complexities of presence, perception, and transformation.
