In Gaze, the subject is revealed through controlled contrast rather than outline. Working in white charcoal on black paper, I focused on isolating light across the eyes and facial structure, allowing the form to emerge from darkness.

Artist Bio

James Messervy is an Australian artist working primarily in pastel. His work explores realism through light, texture, and atmosphere, with a particular interest in how restraint and shadow can suggest presence rather than describe it fully.
