Oil on cardboard
Signed on the back.
The painting is based on a conversation that I had on an early-morning run along Mullaloo Beach. Occasionally I would see Bob fishing, just north of the surf club.
He pulls a self-made contraption of crates and buckets across the beach to the best spot to fish. Intrigued by the image I asked him if I could take a photo to paint.
I asked him why I don’t see him there every week; his response, ‘As long as there’s an easterly, I’ll keep coming back to fish’. This sums up the painting for me. There is a sense of fragility about him, alone, barefoot and rested on his seat. The look on his face has a contrasting sense of determination and resilience.
