Artwork Description

The Hazara are a persecuted minority in Afghanistan, thought to be descendants of Mongol soldiers left behind by Genghis Khan. This is the face of a people facing existential threats, with the determination to survive and flourish against all odds. The photograph does not do justice to the contrast between the deep blacks and the red. I am influenced by the old masters who used intensely dark backgrounds to add brilliance to the subject.
