Artwork Description

Turmoil was painted through the thick weight of grief β€” a response to personal loss and the search for stillness within it. It speaks to the quiet resilience of beauty that endures amid chaos. Strength, here, is not loud or unyielding, but exposed and steady, feminine and fierce. Like the Western Australian coast I grew up with β€” at its most breathtaking when a storm rolls in β€” this work holds both turbulence and grace. It is about finding form within the formless, and a kind of peace inside the noise.

.

This piece is painted on birch wood panel with the edges painted to continue the flow and colour of the piece from every angle. It is perfectly ready to hang with d-rings securing solid hanging wire. The back of the piece includes title, date, signature and a hand written artists statement on this piece as cultivating connection with my collectors is incredibly important to me.

Artist Bio

Janna Jones is a figurative oil painter based in Coogee, Western Australia. Her work explores the complexities of identity, perception, and emotional experience, inviting viewers into quiet moments of reflection. Through a detailed and conceptually driven process, her paintings use the human form not only as subject but as a conduit for connection β€” offering space for projection, interpretation, and shared presence.

Janna often begins with a fully realised visual concept β€” sometimes envisioning an entire body of work before a single mark is made. Her method includes building references, testing palettes, and working in layered stages, either through tonal underpainting or the assertive application of vivid colour. Each piece is crafted to evoke the emotional and psychological undercurrents of lived experience, grounded in memory, self-awareness, and human vulnerability.

Her creative path has been shaped by both formal study and formative personal experiences. After studying Art and Design in Milan in 2011, she pursued luxury leathergoods, presenting collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (2015–19) and New Zealand (2018). Always illustrating, Janna began painting in 2023 β€” finally embracing the medium after years of hesitation around its permanence β€” and has since refined her portrait practice through mentorships with celebrated artists. A profound brush with mortality as a teenager instilled a lasting awareness of life’s fragility β€” a perspective that continues to shape the urgency and reverence in her work.

Janna’s work has been exhibited in group shows and art awards consistently since 2023, and her pieces are now held in private collections around the world.
Connecting to the culturally and creatively hungry β€” those drawn to the emotional power of portraiture as a reflective space for meaning making and personal exploration.
