Reference for this painting was shot on location; graffiti covers a decaying portable school classroom, behind a shattered window stands a girl with an expression of ambiguous youthful innocence.
The work is rich with symbols of graffiti as a contemporary hieroglyph, depicting an individual who does not fit into the conventions placed upon them.
One such symbol is that of the rainbow, the use of rainbow flags has a long tradition; displayed in many cultures around the world as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, of hope and of yearning, as well as homosexual pride. I have included the rainbow motif to bring awareness to and in protest of our government’s stance on same sex marriage, and a desire to express tolerance for all.
