OOMBI
OOMBI is North Queensland jail slang for Suboxone; a diversionary drug provided for the treatment of opioid abuse.
The Opiate Substitution Treatment program (OST) in Queensland prisons was initially trialled at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre (Queensland's most northerly prison).
The consequence of this decision was that the prison with the least exposure to substance abuse issues was suddenly accommodating the worst substance abusers in the State.
New habits and "skills" are readily adopted. Opiate and needle culture was quickly embraced by men from the Gulf, Peninsula, and the Torres Strait communities.
OOMBI expresses an opinion that this ill considered Government policy is a disastrous assault on an eroding indigenous culture.
