This work is an assertion of Aboriginal identity and of the profound connection between Aboriginal people and our country. The expression "Aboriginal land, always was, always will be" is a well-known political slogan and a statement of fact which represents our vast 65,000-plus years' occupation of this continent and the struggle over the past 220-odd years to have this recognised. By spelling out this statement in the form of an optometrist's eye chart this work literally challenges the way we see. It particularly challenges those who deny the truth and magnitude of Aboriginal history and how this history is also part of a contemporary Aboriginal reality. The work is also a way of subverting Western science and Western classification systems even as it uses the language of the coloniser.
