Artwork Description

This artwork was a response to when I learnt about the red light district in Britain and the way it functions and who works in it. I learnt about the cycle of drug abuse that the sex workers struggle with. I felt its important to educate others through my art so this piece was an educational piece about the dark side of the red light district

Artist Bio

I am a mixed media-based artist, interested in painting and sculptural installation. In my practice, I work with various materials ranging from acrylic paint, water-based ink, plaster bandages and clay. My use of materials is deliberate and based on what I’m trying to express within my work. I ask myself is it tough? Is it soft? Is it dark? My works aim to express my personal experiences of being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and spending time in psych wards in my teenage years. My understanding of mental illnesses is important for me to discuss and share through my artwork’s concept. I focus on educating others about such topics and bringing comfort and understanding to those who struggle personally with these themes. I enjoy using colour theory to help present the ideas behind my work. Bright colours can present the way an emotion can feel, and complementary colours can express that something has a positive and negative point of view. Colours support my exploration of what is the contemporary femme womanly figure? And how can I explore this with sensitivity from a cis-gender perspective? I take inspiration from the Fauvism art movement of the 20th century in my exploration of how to use colour to embolden my works. My goal as an artist is to become a freelance artist, using my work to educate others about different mental illnesses and bring comfort and understanding to those dealing with those struggles.
