Crab smiled. The girl on the right’s irritated. He’s looking at the snow report, like he does, every morning, when they come to watch the sunrise. It’s his little ritual.
“We met in France, in the snow,” Crab often hears them tell strangers.
“He was a dish pig in a youth hostel,” then they laugh because everyone assumes he was the capable ski instructor. She was a singer trying to make it in London. A singer who had lost her voice in more ways than one. It wasn’t all fireworks when they met but a knowing: a knowing, this was it. In years to come they will decide to have a child and realise…they’re already pregnant. And when they tell their daughter how she came to be they will say she was made from pure love. Crab hopes one day he’ll meet his true love and he sidesteps another huge foot and totters down a sand hole.
