Artwork Description

The painting is from one of my walks along the beach front near where I live. I almost called the painting Whistling Pine and Shadows, however, She-Oak and Shadows, I thought sounded more poetic. Casuarina equisetifolia L have many names, Horsetail Tree, Whistling Pine, Australian Pine and Mile Tree to name a few. With beach erosion and climate change trees of this nature serve to help stabilise the banks, which reduces surface-water runoff, erosion and sedimentation. Whilst not the most picturesque tree, wind through the pine needles creates a strange whistle.
The painting is professionally framed in a simple white timber, the glass will be replaced with acrylic for delivery.

Artist Bio

I have been a practicing artist since my teenage years, from being privately tutored by a professional artist in oil painting where the beginnings were still life studies in montones before moving into using colour for portraits and landscapes. Along with these classes I studied commercial art part-time.
Later in my twenties with the emergence of porcelain art I attended classes and workshops for many years learning different composition styles and formats. Later on I opened my own retail shop and studio, where I taught many different porcelain techniques and sculpting in clay for reproduction.
Moving to rural Queensland with the various components needed for sculpting no longer easily accessible I made the decision to return to my first passion for which I attended various workshops and later the opportunity to study at the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba for abstract watercolour techniques. Since then I have added inks and ink block techniques to my watercolour palette, those which define the strong and vibrant colours of Australia. I love using the American Watercolour Fine Canvas as well as painting on quality watercolour paper.
I have exhibited and participated in various exhibitions and competitions over the years both in major cities as well as rural areas and within the region that I now live. I have been fortunate to have received Awards of High Extinction including 1st Place Awards.
2024 1ST Place Award "Shadows At Maheno", Seascape/Landscape Hervey Bay Regional Gallery Exhibition.
