Bush Camp with Smoking Campfire and Small Waterfalls

This is the seventh painting from the “Sorry Arthur” series that features large painted rocks in the landscape that are so characteristic of my Artist’s bush camps.
This is another painting that celebrates my long association with rivers that have rock
outcrops and tall gum trees. These paintings often feature freshwater falls that frequent this type of landscape to supply drinking water and that mystic sound of running water.
The landscape is created using multi layered oil painting technique building colours and textures, often using solvents to crack the painting surface to accentuate the rocks surface and to highlight their ancient characters .
Riverside caves are a feature of this series and many paintings depict highlighted eyes of rock wallabies that shelter there to escape the heat. I often include a caricature of my Black Labrador who often came with me on many of my camping , painting expeditions., Now long dead but his spirit still lives on in my paintings.
My Art is created by using multi layered oil paint which is combined with layered Damar Varnish tints that add to the complexity of strokes and mark making so typical in my artworks. This complexity of mark making is what makes my artwork so collectable.

Born 1956. I started to paint the Australian landscape, it's light and forms as a young man back in the 1970's. I grew up in the Bush and I love to draw and paint the landscape in oils, acrylics and watercolours. I have always enjoyed the paintings of Arthur Boyd, Fred Willians and Bret Whitely. A lot of my Art has it's roots in these artists styles and palettes. My process often involves painting in the landscape with watercolours capturing a quick impression of the landscape and often these sketches are quite fluid and loose. My followers and collectors love buying these sketches.

In my art studio I may work up these watercolour sketches into major works. The Gungarlin series started that way. Over the years I have created several series of paintings called the" Sorry Arthur but I can't afford one of yours" and "Sorry Fred...." these influences and series will continue. Celtic influences and ideas are often reflected in my latest works which are now forming as part of the Australian landscape.

I have had many solo and mixed exhibitions starting back in 1974 at the Sapphire North Gallery at Sapphire Beach ,Coffs Harbour and have continued to exhibit up until 1994 at the University of Queensland Staff Club.

I won the Commonwealth Bank prize in 1974 and have been highly commended in the Suncorp Art Prize in 1988 and 1989.

Currently I live in Brisbane and spend my time between fly fishing and in my new Art studio drawing and painting.
