Artwork Description

JC is an expressionist artist whose work seeks to explore the intricate complexities of consciousness.

The building blocks of our personality are a complex system of likes and dislikes. The difference between you and I, when talking of personality, is a mere matter of a difference in preference. We then hold onto these preferences and think they identify us.

The logical mind thinks I do what I like, this is my freedom. However, the very bondage of life is in our likes and dislikes. We think we are free, however when we look at it closely, we have developed subconscious behaviour patterns that either move us toward what we like, or away from suffering. Therefore, our perceived freedom is repetitious behaviour patterns of a hedonistic nature. We shift from being free to choose the course of our life, into a reactive stimulus/response behaviour pattern that robs us of conscious choice. This is the basis of all suffering.

We lose all discretion when we like or dislike something. Our awareness becomes stifled because we amplify the positives for the things we like and negatives for the things we don’t. The more we like, the more we amplify, and so it is true in reverse. This becomes a problem because the basis of consciousness is awareness. We only know we are alive because we’re aware. Therefore, the more we like and dislike, the more reactive we become, and the more our awareness is affected, and our perception of reality skewed. This means the less we can authentically perceive existence.

Furthermore, the very basis of life is to seek out our desires. Thinking our seemingly insatiable appetite for happiness is in our next acquisition, or the next thing we would like. Is a belief that is short lived as with each new addition of material possession, we soon discover our newly acquired like didn’t quite fulfill us as we may have thought it would. Prolonging our suffering as we continue to long for something more than ourselves.

This, according to eastern mysticism, is because what we are seeking isn’t an individual thing but rather a destination. To be part of the whole once more. As they see it, the division of the individual is a construct, and if we were to follow the path of the enlightened masters, we would find, what we crave is to be part of the whole and not for just a piece of it. A collective consciousness, not an individual consciousness. Even science agrees, through the study of quantum physics, when we burrow down deep enough, everything is made of the same material. There is no you and I. There is just One. We are one with mother nature, not separate from her. Yet our mind has created a division because it is outside our experience. Outside the detection of our five senses so it is beyond our conscious awareness.

Consciously or subconsciously, there is an internal battle being played out in our minds. Between materiality and spirituality. Natures often subconscious forces that pull us in opposing directions as we pursue our likes in an effort to fulfill our desires in the name of continuous expansion.

JC tries to portray these complexities, and his own spiritual journey, by giving them visual representation in a digital form. He invites the viewer to question their own subjective reality and consider how their own repetitious behaviour patterns and compulsions are standing in the way of their ultimate happiness.

Artist Bio

Jeff Caulfield, an accomplished portrait and fine art photographer hailing from Sydney, Australia, is an artist whose journey in the world of art has evolved through profound introspection and a deep exploration of the human condition.

Background and Evolution:
Upon completing his Bachelor of Fine Art at the College of Fine Arts (UNSW) in 2015, Jeff Caulfield initially envisioned himself as a fashion and commercial photographer. However, life took an unexpected turn, leading him down a path of reflection and self-discovery. He faced unforeseen life and health challenges, prompting him to question the course of his existence and the true meaning of life.

In this introspective phase, JC turned to practices such as meditation, martial arts, yoga, and internal soul-searching. Through these disciplines, he experienced a transformation in his priorities, realizing that blindly contributing to the relentless pursuit of materialism no longer aligned with his inner calling.

Artistic Vision:
JC's art serves as a visual chronicle of his metaphysical journey. His works are laden with symbolism and deep personal meaning, inviting viewers to reflect on their own spiritual paths and the complex interplay between material desires and the quest for deeper meaning.

Representative Figures: In his artworks, JC often portrays figures that symbolize his own journey. These sculpted bodies are not just physical representations but metaphors for his decades of dedication to martial arts, resistance training, and the relentless pursuit of self-mastery in all aspects—mentally, physically, energetically, and spiritually.

Sexual Symbolism: The often-sexualized nature of his works is a symbolic representation of the potent force of sexual desire in human life. These elements express the tension between conscious discipline and repetitive behavioral patterns that have shaped his own personal journey.

Consumerism Commentary: The presence of branded underwear in some of his works serves as a commentary on the pervasive consumerist mentality and the capitalist game that has been an inescapable part of his life. It highlights the amnesic nature of these pursuits, often leading to a barren trajectory devoid of spiritual fulfillment.

Natural Backdrops: Many of JC's works are set against coastal backgrounds, where the beauty of Mother Nature's creation shines through. These stunning natural settings, where the five elements converge, serve as a perfect canvas for his visual narratives, emphasizing the connection between humanity and the natural world.

Philosophical Exploration:
JC is an expressionist artist who explores the intricate complexities of consciousness. His work delves into the nature of human likes and dislikes and how these preferences shape individual personality and behavior. He points out the paradox of seeking happiness through the pursuit of desires, only to find temporary fulfillment and continued longing for more.

His art challenges viewers to question their own subjective realities and contemplate how repetitive behavior patterns and compulsions may obstruct the path to ultimate happiness. Through his work, JC offers a visual invitation to reflect on the internal struggle between materialism and spirituality that often defines our lives.

In essence, JC’s artistic journey is a testament to the power of self-discovery, introspection, and the transformative potential of art to shed light on the profound complexities of the human experience. His work invites us all to embark on a spiritual journey of introspection and self-awareness.
