Welcome to a snapshot of my artistic life and what inspires my creativity. For around 10 years through the medium of oil painting and longer through drawing, I have been blessed with many wonderful teachers who have tutored me through adult evening classes.
This has overflowed into my personal life where i spend what recreational hours I can manage painting in a makeshift studio which happens to have a car parked in it. You might know it as a garage.
Residing in the South Western suburbs of Sydney my approach to painting can be summed up with two philosophies and what I think defines my style –vibrant use of colour, which can be exaggerated or come as a surprise in my work.
Coming back to the philosophies my mode of operation is the following:
1) You don’t have to like my work but you certainly won’t be able to ignore it in a gallery space amongst others. I go for the dramatic and unusual
2) I need to believe in what I am painting If I don’t the viewer wont either. This helps to bring out my inner emotions onto the canvas and hopefully produce something worthwhile.
I once posed a question to one of my teachers. ”I suppose I should settle down a bit and stick to the one type of subject?” The reply came back “Why would you wan’t to do that?, why limit yourself ?” Upon reflection I agreed.
This is where you find I try to be as versatile as possible, undertaking portraits, landscapes, the animal world, architecture and those big issues in life.
Putting this profile together is just that, to raise it. Most artist’s don’t sell themselves very well or are wise with money, I qualify for those categories wholeheartedly.
The end goal for me is that I actually sell my first piece and be accepted into a few more art prizes. Both of these objectives are not under my control.
I lied about the two philosophies earlier, I actually have a third. The main thing is to enjoy what I am doing, have fun and don’t take myself too seriously otherwise it is time to hang up the brushes.
