Jennifer Buick is an artist living in Katoomba. Born in the Uk she studied to be a Surface Pattern Designer in Manchester.
Now living in the Blue Mountains, a stunning UNESCO area as big as Switzerland. As an avid bushwalker she is inspired by the colours and textures of the paths and trails that are all around.
Painting in oils is now a daily practice for Jennifer and she feels a real push to create using the thick buttery paints to reinterpret the inspiration she gathers on her walks. Constantly striving to produce simple marks to keep things loose and energetic.
“I love the play of light, the constant shifting of tones and colours. I love walking at the golden hour when the slanting shadows make everything more dramatic. The dramatic rock faces of the Escarpment where I live at once warm and honey toned and then grey and blue and cold. Truly a feast for the eyes”.
Nature really speaks loudly here at 1000mts above sea level, the incredible contrasts of colour that seem unbelievable. Sometimes she records the colours via photos as they seem too bright to believe. This may be due to growing up in the UK where colours are often far more muted.
‘How living alone for the first time ever I feel able to be fully connected to my process of sketching and marking up a composition, much time and concentration is needed and I am really enjoying the focus it brings”.
