Artwork Description

The ancient Romans and Greeks believed that objects, plants, places and creatures possessed a distinct soul - a spiritual essence - which they called animism.

My new series of paintings is inspired by this idea of animism. I have merged images from ancient Roman sculpture with flowers to express reverence for the ancient world. They experimented with ways of representing the human body, both as object of beauty and of meaning. The power of Greek and Roman female sculptures, combined with flowers, evokes both strength and beauty and therefore has lasting aesthetic value.

The erosion and disfigurement throughout the millennia does not diminish the beauty and resilience of these statues. By adding an embellishment of flowers I seek to imbue this lasting beauty with added meaning.

Artist Bio

My studio is situated in the Blue Mountains area west of Sydney Australia, which provides me with the perfect backdrop from which to indulge my love of both travel and botanical beauty. These passions have a significant impact upon my work.

As a studio painter I take a surrealist approach to still life. My distinct method of distortion creates vibrant images filled with movement and energy. This painting style is to disintegrate shapes and colors into fragments, a process of applying paint meticulously like pieces in a puzzle. I’m allowing images to develop like broken worlds pieced together to provide both movement and rhythm.

Paintings begin with a layer of acrylics followed by another layer in my favorite medium oil paint. Each painting is then finished with a gloss varnish which enhances the richness of colors. I usually work on one painting at a time, finding it satisfying to focus on that one piece – this can take a few weeks depending on the size.

The titles for my paintings come from poetry, songs and inspirational quotes.

I am a three-time finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Portrait Award for Women, as well as a prestigious art prize finalist and invited artist in many other exhibitions, my work is admired by critics and art collectors alike.

Born in Sydney and resided in New York for 18 years.
