Artwork Description

Etching on paper

Signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity.

I am devoting a series of etchings to the great illustratos, Dulac and Rackham. The muted colours, the detail and the mood depicting a period long ago in an exotic land. they have a fairytale feel or visiting the arabian nights.

Two plates have been etched in this work. One contains the women in their surroundings and over this is laid a 'jali' which shelters them and gives seclusion.
A woman sits in solitude, surrounded with exotic beauty. There is however, a suggestion that she is not content and the mood makes us ponder her situation. A message is about to be received and the viewer is left wondering about its impact.
(A sepia only version is available.)This is a variation in this small edition of 10. The edition is variable as colour has been varied. The plate is covered in hardground then drawn into. This is when the lines are etched. The next process involved etching the tones. A very important step in this particular work. I wanted the image to pop from the dark surroundings. The plate has been inked up in dark prussian blue and been handpulled on my press using Magnani 300gsm etching paper. Watercolour is added in many subtle layers to give a 'glazed' effect.
