Artist Bio

Jennifer Garrard – Artist Biography

Jennifer Garrard (born 5 December 1962) is an emerging Australian painter whose art celebrates colour, freedom, and the joyful spirit of creative expression.

From a young age, Jennifer was drawn to caring for others, fulfilling her childhood dream through a long and meaningful career in nursing. She worked extensively in Mother and Baby units before moving into management roles within aged care. For many years, her purpose was defined by service and compassion—until an unexpected diagnosis of arthritis reshaped her path entirely. Following knee replacement surgery and a long, challenging rehabilitation, Jennifer found herself searching for a new outlet to bring lightness and meaning into her days.

That outlet arrived in the form of art. What began as a beginner’s “Doodling with Ink and Watercolour” class at her local community centre quickly became a lifeline. With no rules, no expectations, and a focus on simple beauty—drawing leaves and flowers—Jennifer rediscovered a sense of curiosity and joy. Painting became not only a creative pursuit but also a powerful source of emotional healing and freedom.

Known for her bold use of colour and intuitive mark-making, Jennifer naturally gravitated toward acrylics and large canvases. Her vibrant, layered works reflect her love of movement, texture, and the emotional language of colour. Each painting is an exploration of energy—free, expressive, and grounded in feeling rather than form.

Jennifer’s passion soon expanded beyond her own studio practice. She was invited by her Community Centre to co-create murals with local children aged one to five, transforming their playful printing with objects and paint splashes into a lively tree filled with animals and wonder. The success of this project inspired a second mural, this time celebrating life under the sea. Both pieces now brighten public spaces, embodying the joy of creative collaboration.

Today, Jennifer paints primarily for the sheer joy it brings. Often accompanied by uplifting music, meditative sounds, or inspiring podcasts, she allows intuition to guide her brush, creating from a place of flow and gratitude. Recently, she has begun hosting collaborative art experiences, where groups come together to create shared works that celebrate connection and love.

In 2026, Jennifer will begin teaching art at her local Community Centre—sharing not only her skills but also the deep sense of freedom and confidence that creativity has brought her.

Though early in her artistic journey, Jennifer’s work already carries a distinctive voice—vivid, heartfelt, and infused with a sense of wonder. Above all, her art reflects a life lived with gratitude, courage, and colour. For Jennifer, painting is more than an activity; it is an expression of freedom, healing, and joy.
