Artwork Description

The Irrepressible series is a collection of women; mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, grandmothers, nieces and friends. They’ve endured so much. No matter their age, they wear their thoughts, their feelings, their hopes and their fears.

In this series, I wanted to exemplify the beauty in these women through the application of collage, colour and mark making, in a loose and playful way. I hope, in some way, this has resulted in the effortless beauty of these women. Beauty was important for the work itself, however only as it relates to the resilience and strength of women who have felt abuse, trauma, or been controlled in some way in their lifetime.

The only way to infuse these complex emotions into the work is to study the facial anatomy of emotion, and work intently on the features of the face. One woman in particular, was angry in my studio for a very long time. It took many attempts at softening her expression before I could let her out into the world. She may have been angry, she’s also irrepressible.

Artist Bio

Welcome to my creative world. I’m so glad you’re here! I’m Jenny, and I’m a mixed media abstract artist from the Gold Coast, Australia.

My work explores the past and its relationships between people. I delve into the heartache and happiness of our ancestors, parents, grandparents, and the intersection of surfaces that surround them. I feel it is a rollercoaster of emotions that I hope to convey to the viewer.

I create paintings that are a representation of old surfaces, old walls, containing every mark, a history of colours, and a whisper of the people they’ve seen in times gone by. What have these walls witnessed, endured, and what do they contain?

Each artwork is a process of many layers, using acrylic paint, pencil, collage and oil pastels to enrich the surface and allow for an excavation to the underpainting. This process is cathartic, as I seek to explore and understand the relationships and emotions that make up a family’s history.

I would love to hear from you if you have questions or would like to discuss any of my work.
