Ocean Forest speaks of my passion for sea kelp gardens and how integral they are to so many of our ocean going mammals and fish. They sway with the tides and create a beautiful light and shadow effect when they weave through the sunsβ rays. They provide food and shelter and this unique environment featured in the recent Netflix documentary My Octopus Teacher.
The sea kelp forests in the oceans off California grow at an impressive rate of 11 inches a day! These ocean environments play home to numerous marine species and provide the ideal nursery for young fish. Garibaldi fish are well known for their striking colour particularly in juveniles where the iridescent blue markings are still present.
In this piece I have sought to capture the swaying nature of the kelp and the play of light within it. The blues and greens mingle together to create a peaceful scene where pops of lime green and yellow sparkle in its midst. The red fish provide the perfect break to this symphony of plants and ocean and help ease your eye through the patterning. The exaggerated landscape shape of the canvas makes it feel like youβre looking into a snippet of the ocean, perfect for letting your imagination run wild.
