“What Remains” considers the way objects or moments gather meaning over time. Some things gain significance simply because everything around them has changed. They are carried forward quietly, becoming part of how a place or a moment is remembered.

The work is concerned with that sense of persistence — not history in a grand sense, but the quieter ways significance forms in our everyday lives. Over time, things accumulate meaning through repetition, memory, and recognition.

In this way the painting reflects on what stays present as time moves on: the small constants that continue to hold their place while everything else shifts around them.

Jessica Mazlin is a Brisbane-based oil painter whose work explores the quiet beauty of life’s impermanence through detailed studies of the natural world.
Influenced by the still-life traditions of the Dutch Golden Age, she draws inspiration from artists such as Caravaggio, Vermeer, and Rachel Ruysch, whose mastery of light and symbolism continues to inform her practice.

Jessica’s paintings reinterpret the vanitas concept for a contemporary audience — reflecting on the fragility of life and the grace found in transience.
