Ink & metallic acrylic on canvas
Chauvet Caves have some of the oldest painted and draw rock art in the world. Chauvet is considered one of the most significant pre-historic rock art sites and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. According to radio carbon dating the caves were used by humans up to 32,000 years ago. However, they were never inhabited, only visited.
Various walls are covered in beautiful, life like drawing of animals and human-animal figures. Some of these animals never physically existed in the Chauvet region. Even more unique is the movement depicted in the drawings. Animals often have six or more legs representing what one can capture in a blurred photo of movement in action. There have also been interesting correlations drawn by scientists between the locations of rock art within the complex caves and spaces of acoustic resonance in the caves. How did the ancients have such a deep understanding of sound, creation of form and resonance?
Please note that the piece changes in different light due to the metallic paint.
