Artwork Description

Hui's paintings respond to her recent family gathering during Lunar New Year in Hong Kong. The work relates to a painting series created this year that examines family reunion and parting and Hui's mixed feelings of bliss and grief in celebration and grave visiting. Blue symbolises running tears and over-flowing emotions in the series.

Hellos and goodbyes captures the scene where Hui is sitting on a plane next to the window. With light shining through the little window, Hui gazes into her heart and thinks about arriving to and departing from the two homes, Australia and Hong Kong. The thoughts and feelings are represented with blue flower pedals emerge from the seat and surrounds Hui.

Artist Bio

Jessie Hui is from Hong Kong, living on Kaurna land. Her painting practice examines impermanence of feelings and in her day to day living experience. Working with acrylic and oil on canvas, Hui puts the mundane and unnoticed aspects of the everyday into a distorted and exaggerated dreamscape. Her work emphasises in having transparency, contrast and an unconventional representation of time and space, creating a magical view of the everyday. Hui completed a BFA(Hons) from UNSW Art and Design and exhibited across galleries on Gadigal Land/ Sydney and in Tarntanya/ Adelaide.
