Artwork Description

This work is deeply influenced by the forests of the Mid North Coast, on Biripi Country. Standing among these tall eucalypts, I’m always aware that these landscapes hold stories, knowledge, and connections far older than my own. The painting reflects the feeling of being held in that space—surrounded by peeling bark, soft plants, and the quiet shifting of light through the canopy. It’s shaped by the experience of spending time on this Country, noticing its resilience through fires and floods, and recognising my place within it as a visitor.

Artist Bio

Jill Hays is a North Coast landscape artist whose work captures the changing light, colour, and atmosphere of the Australian bush and hinterland. Working in acrylic and oil on canvas and canvas paper, her paintings are grounded in direct observation but shaped by memory, movement, and feeling.

At its core, Jill’s practice is about connection—to place, to light, and to fleeting moments of beauty in the everyday. This first collection serves as an introduction to her visual language, with future collections continuing to expand on these themes and deepen her exploration of the North Coast landscape.
