Artwork Description

This artwork tells the story about the junction on Peates Mountain, where you head right down North Rocks Road. We used to train on this section for ultra marathon races. It’s tough, gravelly and steep. On the return, the morning has warmed up and some sections are exposed and hot. The glare reflects off the lighter gravel parts on the trail and the run/hike back up makes you feel very uncomfortable and yet, there is such a sense of accomplishment that comes with doing something difficult.

While it tells my story, this piece sits quietly amongst other pieces of art or on its own. With a neutral palette and bespoke timber frame, this painting will suit many interior options.

Artist Bio

Jill Thompson is an emerging artist based in the coastal town of Lennox Head, in northern New South Wales. Her abstract landscapes are shaped by visceral memories of sound, scent and fleeting visual impressions gathered while cycling off-road trails and hiking remote paths. Working primarily in acrylic, Thompson often incorporates collage, ash, sand and other natural elements onto canvas, wooden panels or reclaimed timber blocks, grounding the materiality of her work in the environment.

"I love those special moments when you approach the top of a climb - as you round the final corner the air changes, the cool breeze hits your face, the trees part and the landscape reveals itself! That fleeting sense of awe is what I seek to translate and share in my work."
