LITTLE AUDREY SKIPPING OVER MELBOURNE
Since 1936 the iconic Skipping Girl neon sign has found a place in the hearts of all those who have glimpsed her skipping the night away. The Skipping Girl Vinegar Sign, colloquially known as “little Audrey” is a much-loved historic animated neon sign in the inner suburb of Abbotsford, Melbourne.
Over the last decade I have become obsessed with the challenge of painting the Skipping Girl Neon Sign in all her complexity of colour and detail, as well as capturing her presence. For this version I wanted to find a vantage point where the Skipping Girl appears to be skipping across the Melbourne skyline. It took 6 months to get permission to access the roof of an adjacent Art Deco apartment block, a further climb up on top of an outhouse lined up this view to perfection.
Back in the studio the gigantic oil painting commenced, measuring 183cm in height and 235cm wide and took many months to complete.
This large print (80x94cm) is an affordable way own this iconic view of Little Audrey Skipping over Melbourne.
