Artwork Description

This is so wonderfully thick with paint and ripe with texture. As it should be. It is a relative to my most recent inspired painting. I wanted to do a larger piece, but only had a small canvas and desperately needed to paint. So a study it is. I really hope you love it. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and when we dream of a white horse we are dreaming of the spirit's vitality. So this piece is a painting of looking into behind the eyes. The poem I wrote first on the 19th and was intended to be with the artwork. Hopefully you enjoy that as well. It discusses the need we all have at times to hide who we are for fear of being found lacking, discusses the meaning we have if we are in fact a divine word manifested, and that love is the highest card we have in our hands.

"Your Blue Eyes"

An unintelligible singularity.
To aim for this
would be as the honesty of its namesake -
a mathematical flaw.
By the senses we move.
By meaning we perceive.
So, you see,
it is not from your form that I derive
my perception, but by your meaning.
This is not a door, but
a walking-through place
This is not merely a card, but
the King's Ace
of spades. To call a spade
a cliché
For what is honesty without openness?
What is love's handmaiden but truth?
Something to hide.
The aggregation of shame, disillusionment, and lies.
To fear being known and found wanting
is to become the chase.
The endless chase
where all conceptions of time and space
simply break down to
the singularity.
It doesn't really exist.
To exist we must be known.
We must be the walking-through place.
The place where love can find meaning and so perceive itself in our face.

Artist Bio

Collected both nationally and internationally New Zealand born Australian based multi award-winning artist Jo S. Stacey has work held in private collections in six countries across the globe. Her work has also been leased privately to help showcase multi-million dollar properties here in Australia. In 2023 her piece "Three Clydes" won best in show (AU$1,000) at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and "Not Through Me" won the figurative section (AU$2,000). This year her work "Behind These Eyes" won best in show at the 1770 Art Show judged by Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Assistant Director Tarragh Cunningham (AU$5,000).
Jo is faith driven with a passion for life and is inspired by simple moments in time that present themselves to us at any given moment. These brushes with life often feel magical or profound, and yet appear in seemingly ordinary environments to the watchful eye and waiting spirit. Sometimes they materialise in the back garden, a street corner, down at the beach while riding the horse, in our dreams or even in a conversation. These moments and conversations often feature in her work. We hope you enjoy.
