Artwork Description

Featuring a soldier crab on sand in the foreground, with trees and an impending storm cloud slowly moving across.
Exhibited in Tokyo National Museum 2019 as part of the International Sumie Association exhibition. Printed in the annual association book. Custom framed in a matte black frame and grey mat board.

Painted using traditional methods, equipment and materials imported from Japan. An ink stick is ground down using small circles diluted into water on a stone ink well. Brushes are made of bamboo and animal hair. I don't use brushes made from fur or hair of any animals that would result in the animal's death. Gasenshi (bamboo paper) is a very fine translucent hand made paper featuring specs and marks that should not be considered imperfections.
Once completed the painting is signed and stamped in Japanese with ink using a unique one-of-a-kind stamp made for my full name (Jo-an/Joanne). The artwork was sent back to Japan to be 'backed' which involves using water to fuse the bamboo paper too another sheet of backing paper.
