My fascination with thrift shops and all things CURIO began in my late teens. At that time, Finding and buying the ‘grooviest’, retro clothing for the best price was the activity at hand. In later years I found myself thinking more deeply about these items- their life and history; who originally purchased them and why ?; how much were they loved and cherished?; what meanings did they hold for the owner?
The original thrift shop was a messy treasure trove. You had to rummage to find the best bargain or most interesting piece. These days, in many instances that has changed. The second hand shop has become a gallery; a gallery of hope that maybe in this new life someone will love them again. This repurposing and recycling has given a new lease of life to many of the objects. Sometimes the original item becomes something new. Other times it is the setting in which it is placed that makes it desirable. This presentation sets the objects apart from traditional second hand shops- telling a new story and creating a new identity for the object. It makes the viewer look at the objects in a different way.
