Collaborative work - embroidery by Sue Cunningham
This piece is an abstract collation of colourful fungi. There is so much to love about the fungi kingdom! Fungi can be used to make clothes, in vaccines and medicines, special types of fungi are used to clean up oil spills and toxic chemicals. Fungi allow trees to talk to each other through the “Wood Wide Web,” as coined by Dr. Simard, this is a network of Mycorrhizal fungi that forms a symbiotic relationship with tree roots. This expansive network allows trees to warn each other about pests, drought, and disease. These magical Mychorrzial mushrooms can even help reverse climate change; Glomalin, a by-product from mycorrhizal fungi, can capture and store carbon in the soil, removing it from the atmosphere. Apart from all these fascinating attributes, fungi look super cool!
This collaborative piece involves hours of stitching the detailed elements that make up each of the featured fungi present. The background is then carefully and precisely painted in around the embroidered elements. This original technique has proven popular at past exhibitions, with 95% of all embroideries selling. This piece can suit all room types, including bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, studies, kid’s bedrooms or anywhere really.
