Joel’s works are influenced by wastefulness and the vast impact that waste has on our surroundings.
Rather than purchasing from a shelf, Joel finds himself working with unconventional materials such as plastic waste.
The limitations which plastic introduces leads to new discoveries, unexpected outcomes, excitement and intrigue.
Joel’s plastic works are entirely formed from recycled plastic items such as packaging and bags.
Plastic is unpredictable, as heat is applied it stretches, shrinks, shrivels, discolours and quite often falls in whichever direction it feels.
The abundant colours and transparencies found in plastics allows for vibrancy, contrast, shading, changing tones and colours.
Using self-discovered techniques, Joel gently shapes, moulds and applies plastic like ‘brushstrokes’ to a plastic surface consisting of multiple layers.
The finished artworks are then stretched over Joel’s handmade timber frames.
The result, ‘painting like’ artworks which contain nothing but recycled plastic.
