This painting was influenced by documentaries relating to the battles over Darwin and the Northern Territory during the second World War. It depicts an action which took place over Milingimbi on 15 March 1943 when a large Japanese air raid was intercepted by 1 Wing which included elements of 457 Squadron RAAF. 457 Squadron was able to claim the destruction of two Japanese Zero fighters without loss during the action.

Artist Bio
Born in England in 1946 John Barnes is now a local artist whose interest in art started when he was at school in the late 1950's. He successfully completed the CAE Diploma in Visual art. His main interest in painting is maritime and aviation subjects with a preferred medium of oil on canvas.
