Hello there, thanks for taking a look at my profile.
I am John, an artist based in Mount Gambier, South Australia. My wife and I grew up in rural England. After several holidays and much soul searching we decided to make the massive move to Australia, emigrating in 2017.
I have always had a keen interest in art. At school, I really enjoyed the subject; however, I did not start drawing and painting again until six years ago. My wife gave me a pack of pencils and a sketch pad and the joy of creating was rekindled, and I soon put them to good use. Slowly my confidence grew. I then started to experiment with acrylics. I have been mainly self taught, but continue to be mentored by a professional artist.
After a lot of trial and error, I decided to concentrate on people and horses. I feel the two subjects complement each other and are great examples of athleticism in both the human and animal world. Using grey shades I feel I can simplify the most complex of subjects. My work is a mix of realism and abstract. I like to use shapes and patterns as a way of projecting movement and structure into my subjects. Generally I have a rough idea of the shapes I will be incorporating into the painting; however, much of it is a natural process. I usually like to add a bold splash of colour to give the work more contrast and vibrancy.
I hope you like my different style.
